If you are really limited to how much space you have in your yard or on your balcony, then washing clothes and hanging them up can be a real nuisance. You could invest in a retractable washing line as they are ideal for small spaces, but before spending money, there are a few things you should know about them that the manufacturers don't always feel the need to mention.
Not all retractable washing lines are able to offer enough drying for your needs if you have a family of more than three. The very best model which has 5 lines and is wall mounted is will more than suffice, but there are many smaller models that will only cater for around 12-15 feet of drying line.
If you don't have an adjacent wall to connect your washing line too when you need it then there will be the added expense of a purpose build pole or your will then have to sacrifice space and have a concertina style retractable design.
The alternative to this the fold away wall mounted designs which allow you to put up as many lines as you require and then take them down and store them against the wall until you need them again. These are particularly good for balconies and apartment living.
Remember when looking at retractable washing lines that they come with a wind up or tightening facility so as not to get the lines in knots and to make your lines more taught when needed. The mechanism that allows for the in and outward motion of the cables should be durable enough to endure extensive use and you should check to see how easily it can be installed.
Where possible try to research a variety of different designs and find reviews on the products before you purchase your retractable clothesline in order to get a feel for what other consumers are saying about the product and it's features.
