Meerut, an ancient town, is the second largest army cantonment of India and the second fastest developing city of Uttar Pradesh
. The city lies between the plains of the Ganga and Yamuna. Its fertile soil is used for growing crops like wheat, sugarcane and green vegetables.
It is believed that Meerut had derived its name from Maya Rashtra, which used to be the capital of the kingdom of Ravanas father-in-law, Mayasura. According to another legend, Meerut got its name after a troop of Marathas resided here. In the recent archaeological excavation, several remains of the historic town of Hastinapur were found from here.
Among the major attractions in Meerut are Jain Temples at Mohalla Teergaran, St. Johns Church, Augarnath Temple, Jama Masjid, Martyrs Memorial, Suraj Kund, Chandi Devi Temple, Dogra Temple, Kali Temple and the Gandhi Bagh.A Pakistani tank is a popular attraction at the Cantonment area of the city. There is also a wheelers club, race course and a golf course in the cantonment area.
The distance from Meerut to Delhi is around 60 km. New Delhi has numerous monuments, shrines, archaeological structures and amusement parks to attract the travellers. Among the major tourist attractions in the city include old monuments like Red Fort, Qutab Minar, Purana Qila and Jama Masjid. Red Fort, constructed by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, is an important heritage site in Delhi. Red Fort has Diwan-i-Khas, Diwan-i-Aam, Lahore Gate, Mumtaz Mahal and Hayat Bakhsh Bagh.
Among the other tourist destinations in Delhi are India Gate, Swaminarayan Akshardham Temple, Raj Ghat, Birla Mandir, Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, Parliament House, Rashtrapati Bhavan, Rajpath, Humayun's Tomb, Lotus Temple, ISKCON Temple, Jantar Mantar, National Museum, International Dolls Museum, National Zoological Park, National Railway Museum, Teen Murti Bhavan, Lodhi Garden and Safdarjung's Tomb.
Meerut does not have an airport. There are a few trains from Meerut to Delhi. The terminus of most of the trains is Nizamuuddin Railway Station. Many travellers feel it inconvenient to get down at Nizamuddin Railway Station and reach their respective destinations by again hiring a taxi or autorickshaw or catching a bus. It is particularly so when they have to travel a distance of 60 km only.
Most convenient of travelling from Meerut to Delhi and back is by road. There are regular bus services both by the state and private operators from Meerut to Delhi. The bus fare ranges from Rs.95 to Rs.250 depending on the type bus (non-A/c, A/c or deluxe) the travellers use. Travelling by bus, the travellers can get down mostly at their own destinations or near them. Taxi cabs are also available in plenty for travel from Meerut to Delhi and back. The fare for a full taxi will not be less than Rs.1200.
