Houses providing lodging for one or more nights or for long extended periods are called Rooming Houses. They also go by the name of Boarding Houses. While the owners enjoy the right of possession, the lodgers are provided with rooms which may or may not be accompanied with meals and other services such as laundry and cleaning. Rooming Houses are for holiday makers and student. While the holidays are enjoyed to the hilt, lodgers are free to arrange the stay at Rooming Houses. They can sign up for Bed-and-breakfast or Half board or Full board. Rooming Houses are cheap and affordable. Staying in a Rooming house will cost less than it would cost to stay in the cheapest hotel in United States, United Kingdom, Australia and Canada. Typically run by a Landlord/Landlady, Rooming Houses are normally a temporary abode for students and tourists.

The level of the services provided at Rooming Houses is up to par and pretty much akin to the services provided at hotels. Lodgers while having the rented room to them can also access or share the other parts of house with the permission of the owner.

Services that are normally provided at the Rooming Houses include provision of meal, laundry and cleaning. Some of the Rooming Houses may not charge for single meal in a day. The Rooming Houses provide three kinds of services which are as follows, the selection of which is the Lodger's personal discretion.

Bed and Breakfast accommodation offers bed and breakfast only. This type is usually popular amongst tourists. This is the most common type of services provided in the Rooming Houses in United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Australia. Normally, this is most suitable where a stay is short-term, however, special arrangements for longer stay are often times made for local authorities in UK. Half-Board services include bed, breakfast and dinner for lodgers. Lunch is skipped in the schedule. This type of services is mostly popular among students. Full-Board services offer lodgers with bed, breakfast, lunch and dinner. The frequency of Families, holiday makers and tourists using Full-Board services makes this category the most popular of the three. The Full-Board stay costs less than a hotel would in the holiday season.

Rooming Houses were once very popular in the United States are not seen in the same number as they were in the past. Since they offer a most affordable lodging and short-term stay, they are regaining the popularity in the US again. Most of the people, especially the student and holiday makers, are eager to find an affordable and quality replacement for hotels and motels. Hence an increase in renting Rooming Houses is seen lately.
