Should You Exercise With Type 2 Diabetes?

Wieght plays a major part regarding the onset of type 2 diabetes

. Most people when first diagnosed with the disease are obese.

It may be fair to suggest that exercise is not on the list of priorities for people when they are first diagnosed with this disease.

Being overwieght can lead to a loss of self confidence. Unless you are a person who is naturally confident in yourself, you probably don't want to start sweating it out in the local gym amongst others who are fit already!

The good news is that exercise does not have to be gym based. Simple walking is fine. Personally, I bought a copy of a large scale map of my area, and using a piece of string, mapped out a number of 2 mile walks. Every morning I choose one and go walking. I walk at a moderate pace and cover the distance in about 45 minutes.

In fact the distance you walk is not really important - it's the time. If you walk in one direction for about ten minutes, then ten minutes back, that's a total of twenty minutes, which is proved to have a positive health effect, on diabetics in particular.

Just being outside and doing some gardening for twenty minutes is as good.

If you are concerned about overdoing it, remember that you want to be doing aerobic exercise, which is low impact and fairly gentle exercise that you can maintain, as opposed to anaerobic exercise which is short term intensive exercise.

The simple facts are these.

As you exercise, the body needs more energy, and this is produced from the glucose and fat stored in the body. The glucose initially comes from the stored glucose in the liver, where it is stored as glycogen. As you keep exercising, and this is where you will see the value of the more consistent aerobic exercise, the stored glucose is used up, and the body starts to use fat as energy. Fat is the preferred source of energy for aerobic exercise, as it actually provides more energy than an equivalent amount of glucose, and it benefits us, as we want to lose the fat!

It's not just wieght loss either. Other conditions are less likely when we exercise regularly, heart disease for example and bad cholesterol levels are reduced.
