The Barrow Group Theatre Company, which had an Off-Broadway hit earlier this year with The Temperamentals, will open its 23rd season with the American premiere of Clare McIntyre's The Thickness of Skin, directed by Jacob White, in the TBG Studio Theatre.

The play about the complications of offering charity will feature Alison Wright as Laura, Michael Chenevert as Eddie, Myles O'Connor as Michael, Karin Sibrava as Roanna, Wendy Vanden Heuvel doubling as Imogen and Christine, and Eli Gelb ("The Squid & the Whale") as Jonathan.

According to production notes, the playwright McIntyre asks. "In what ways are we responsible to help our fellow human beings?" She highlights "the humorous and humanistic side of life while encouraging us each to reflect and perhaps transform."

In the play, "Laura chooses to help the displaced and out-of-work Eddie. A relationship blossoms and blurs the lines of charity and manipulation. Meanwhile, Roanna and Michael are struggling to understand their son Jonathan, on the cusp of adulthood, and his friendship with their eccentric neighbor, Imogen. Laura and her family must decide to what lengths they will go in order to 'help' their fellow man."

McIntyre received the Samuel Beckett Theatre Award, the London Evening Standard Award for Most Promising Playwright, and the London Critics Circle Award for Most Promising Playwright. In 1993, The Barrow Group produced her play Low Level Panic.

The Thickness of Skin performances at 8 PM Friday through Monday evenings and Sunday matinees at 3 PM at The Barrow Group's Studio Theatre, 312 W. 36th Street, 3rd Floor, in Manhattan.

Tickets are $25 and available at www.smarttix.com or by calling 212-868-4444.
