Richard Branson's Virgin Empire began by publishing a student magazine when he was 16, working hard from a basement in London, just scraping by and getting friends to help out to do the work needed. Marks and Spencer started from a folding table at a Yorkshire market by Michael Marks, a Polish refugee, where everything he sold cost one penny. 10 years later he took on his business partner Thomas Spencer and they began to dominate markets across the country. The success of these men who grew to establish international businesses all began from a simple idea with the help of a basement or a folding table to do so.

If you want to get out there and have a go at starting your own business think small just as Michael Marks did. If retail is your sector get out to your local markets and investigate how much it is to get a pitch. All you need is a folding table and your goods to put on it. A folding table is the best piece of equipment to use when you are starting off small as you may not have transport such as a van that could transport larger apparatus. Setting up at your local market will help you test the waters and see if your goods are well received. It will also enable you to get your name and brand out there amongst the local community to help you better establish yourself.

It is common in the UK for most markets to be run on the weekend so you will need to have enough products to sell, extra staff, as well as a folding table for each town that you will set up in.
