Stress - Why You Need To Cut Down On Caffeine

The word stress is frequently heard these days

. At one time in our lives people we have experienced some form of stress. We usually associate the word stress with something that is negative. In many ways stress can be negative especially, when you experience it on a regular basis however, stress can work for us in a positive way. For example, stress is helpful in giving us the energy and momentum to get things done and achieve our goals.

When we find ourselves becoming over stressed we can take on certain habits that we think will help us to cope better. In certain cases these coping habits can be negative. Rather that improving the problems they actually make it worse. For example, some people may revert to overeating or taking large amounts of alcohol or caffeine.

Caffeine when consumed in small amounts is actually beneficial to your health. As with most things when it is abused it can have unpleasant side effects. One of these side affects is increasing the levels of stress related hormones in the body. In situations where a person is already stressed out drinking caffeine drinks can exasperate the condition. As well as increasing stress related hormones it can also raise your heart beat. If you have an underlying problem such as hypertension or a heart condition then, drinking caffeine can increase the risk of more serious health problems.

Drinking too much caffeine can also disrupt our sleep. When you are suffering from stress a lack of sleep will only make the situation worse. Therefore, it is not a good idea to have a cup of coffee in the late evening especially during the working week.

High consumption of caffeine can also interfere with how we digest our food. This combined with stress can lead to digestive complications that can lead to ulcers and heartburn.

When people are under lots of stress they can acquire a number of unhealthy lifestyle habits that is putting their health at risk. If these include a lack of exercise, a diet that is high in fat and drinking lots of sugary caffeinated drinks will only compound the problem.
