Swimsuit Care Tips

You are finally enjoying the pool in that new swimsuit you purchased

. Great! But then, a few weeks later, you find yourself shopping for a replacement. You paid quite a bit of money for that swimsuit and it didn't seem to hold together any better than the less expensive one you bought last year. Maybe it had something to do with how well you took care of it.

Just like any other piece of clothing, a swimsuit requires care if you want it to last more than one month, let alone more than one season. Whether you swim in the ocean or a pool, harsh conditions can do a number on your precious swimwear. The solution is to take proper care of your swimsuit right from the start. Begin by following the manufacturer's instructions on the label of your swimsuit.

Here are a few tips to help you keep your swimsuit in perfect condition.

1) Use a delicate washing detergent for your swimwear. Harsh detergents will roughen the texture of your swimsuit. It can even cause it to fray or bead up after each wash. Instead opt for a gentle cleanser or even hand soap. If you have one, use a soap especially made for swimwear.

2) Always let your swimwear dry completely. Hang it out to dry when you get home. You can put it in the spinner to remove excess water before you hang it out. Wet swimwear will mildew and you won't be able to bleach it to remove the mold. Putting your swimwear in the dryer is not recommended. The heat of the dryer will break down the elastic in the material itself and the structure of the swimsuit.

3) Hand wash your swimwear. Placing it in the washing machine gives too vigorous a wash action. You can rinse it first to remove any chlorine and then wash. Hang it up in a ventilated area to air dry. Most importantly, wash swimwear after each use.

4) Buy a well-made swimsuit. Search the Internet or your favorite department store for top swimwear companies. Some are just better made than others. You want a swimsuit that is durable and can withstand many washes. Sometimes you get what you pay for, but not always. Do your homework and buy the best built suit your money can buy.

5) Buy more than one swimsuit. If you are on vacation or swim a lot during the summer, you'll want at least one extra swimsuit so you can trade off. This will allow each swimsuit to dry fully between uses as well as cut the use of each suit in half.

6) Avoid sitting on rough surfaces. Have you ever sat on the side of the pool and just slid in? You may have heard your swimsuit bottom getting pulled at by the rough cement. Surfaces like this can snag, tear or otherwise damage your suit in the seat. You don't want your swimsuit threadbare there.

Try these simple tips for keeping your swimwear in the best possible condition all season long. Who knows, you may even be able to wear your favorite swimsuit for another season if you take care of it from day one.
