The French Company 1plusvs Case Against Googles Blacklisting

The job of SEO service providers may be about to get a little harder as Googles virtual monopoly on internet searches is being threatened

. This may mean more work as SEO companies may have to spread out priorities rather than focusing most of their energies on Google.

Legislation Against Googles Monopoly

In the USA, Google is estimated to control about a third of the search engine market and in Europe it is as high as 90%. This has made it by far the most important engine for providers of SEO services to date with others being a minor factor when it comes to search engine optimization (SEO) campaigns.

The company has been scrutinized by official agencies such as the Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice in the United States, and by the European Commission on the other side of the Atlantic concerning their near monopoly of the market.

1plusV and Google

The French company 1plusV became the latest in a long line to make an antitrust complaint against Google in June 2011, and is seeking $423 million in damages from the providers of the number one search engine. This is the largest of the claims against Google in Europe and comes as a result of accusations that 1plusV were blacklisted illegally.

The French company, which makes niche search engines, claims they had thirty of their engines blacklisted between 2007 2010 and that the decision was made by Google in an unfair attempt to curb competition. 1plusV filed a previous antitrust complaint against Google along with three other companies including Microsoft in February 2010 and again a year later; the European Commission is in the process of investigating these claims.

Traditionally, search engine optimization is centered around Google with SEO Services providers paying much less attention to other engines. However, if the legislation from 1plusV and others succeeds, the playing field will become more level and SEO companies will need to dramatically change their SEO strategies.

If they wish to continue to provide the best possible Search Engine Optimization to their customers, they may soon have to pay much more attention to other large internet search providers such as Yahoo and Microsoft, and smaller niche ones such as the engines provided by 1plusV. Though this may affect SEO Company and individual SEO campaigns in a negative way in the short term, more competition in this area should be good overall for internet users.
