He more specifically introduced the Erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA)into common usage which is now the most popular fiber amplifiers used today.

This optic fiber is also known as an EDFA. It is an optical amplifier. Its purpose is to bring a signal in and broaden its ability to reach others. How this is done will be explained further below.

There are several different types of amplifiers aside from EDFAs. There are laser amplifiers, semiconductor optical amplifiers, and raman amplifiers as examples. Doped fiber amplifiers are used to increase the optical signal. This is the category that EDFAs fit into.

How an EDFA works is that the original optical signal is sent into the amplifier. The core of the amplifier is silica with Erbium ions pumped in as well at specific wavelengths. The signal is amplified through stimulations of these erbium ions. These ions then release photons which is the necessary product to help amplification. The final result of the use of this energy increase is the widening of the wavelengths that the signal can fall under. This increases its ability to be used for different types of communication.

To recap this process in more detail, a light source or laser light is sent into the amplifier with the optical signal. This light excites the erbium ions, and photons are released. It is these photons which allow amplification of the signal.

Communication through the internet, telephone, and much more relies on optical fiber such as this described. They have other uses like lighting and cameras for scopes used in the medical field. They are used during surgery and for things like colonoscopies. The signals are being transmitted over these fibers rather than metal wires which is less efficient.

Douglas Hall made an important contribution because he introduced the EDFA to the public. As can be seen, it is very popular because so many people use telephone and internet services. It helps businesses carry on so that they can reach their clients and other businesses. The way it works is very scientific, however, the public knows how to use the products that fiber optics assists.
