According to the National Institute for Mental Health, 14.8 million Americans over the age of 18 suffer from Major Depressive Disorder, and an additional 3.3 million endure Dysthymic disorder, a milder but chronic form of depression. The median onset of symptoms usually occurs in the early 30s, although depression can affect anyone at any age. Typically, depression affects more women than men. Although the emotional symptoms are well documented, the fact remains that depression can also have a profound physical impact on those diagnosed. These physical symptoms are often masked by many other medical concerns, but when more than one of these symptoms are present, it may indicate a diagnosis of depression. The physical symptoms include: Headaches
Back pain
Muscle aches and pains
Chest pain
Digestive issues
Fatigue
Sleep disruption
Change in appetite or weight
Dizziness Although some studies have shown a correlation between physical activity and the improvement of depressive symptoms, the fact is, not enough studies have been done to date to document this. However, the information gathered so far seems to indicate improved physical health can lead to the easement of the symptoms of depression in several ways. The problem of depression is there seems to be a cycle that is difficult to break. A person becomes depressed, and doesnt have the motivation to work out or exercise. Coupled with the physical symptoms plus the disinterest in favorite activities, even something as simple as taking a walk around the block on a regular basis becomes even more difficult, if not impossible, to achieve. Therefore, muscle tone starts to deteriorate, thus perpetuating and adding to the pains already suffered. There are many ways to treat depression to include medication, cognitive therapy, behavioral therapy, light therapy, and
Transcranial Magentic Stimulation (TMS). But improved physical health through exercise cannot be discounted as a contributing factor to the improvement of depressive symptoms. Since depression is primarily considered a result of an imbalance of brain chemicals, regular exercise or physical activity can stimulate endorphins, reduce immune system chemicals that can worsen depression symptoms, and increase body temperature which may have a calming effect. Even a small amount of increased physical activity can have a positive effect on people who suffer from depression.
