The Morden Dj And Technology
In the djying industry technology has certainly shaken things up a bit
. The question is which technology is going to survive and what is going to be extinct. The choice of what medium you choose to use is a hotly debated topic in the industry.
There are 3 main types - vinyl records, cds and the digital dj(those using mp3 files and other digital formats). All formats have their pros and cons take vinyl records for instance they are very reliable, durable but then again they are very heavy and you need a lot of vinyl records to perform a full set at a venue. Cds are relatively very light but they are susceptible to wear and tear especially if you are a busy dj. The digital formats are brilliant as they are very portable and you can carry you whole music collection on a hard drive that can fit in your pocket but where there is technology and computers you know that reliability can be a problem, you always need a backup although this has improved a great deal it's still not as reliable as vinyl records and turntables.
The side of the argument above is focussed on reliability and portability there is the other argument about skill. You cannot scratch on a cd as easily as you can do with vinyl records although the new cdjs do give vinyl a run for its money. Anyone who has used the pioneer cdj will agree with me, it's a fantastic piece of kit. Those who use digital media would use digital players which usually come with mixing software that will impress even the most seasoned of djs, now this is convenient but other djs then argue whether its right to automate what is suppose to be about talent, well that is the question? The average party goes is not bother weather a mix is a result of vinyl being mixed by a skilled craftsman or some software they just want good music and a fantastic night.
On the whole technology has helped the industry and a hybrid of technologies is a good point going forward in my view. While technology always has its critics it makes things better. So let's say you are a dj playing vinyl records including a laptop with some digital music will provide you with a greater selection of music it also enables you to get music that is not available on vinyl as well. The turntables and your laptop will provide redundancy and in the unlikely event that one goes down the party continues with minimal disruption. Technology will help djs but ultimately as every good dj knows nothing replaces the experience gained partying with the best of them.
