The New Galaxy S from Samsung-A Great Looking Handset
The release of Samsungs first high end smartphone
, the Galaxy S, has seen the manufacturer go toe to toe with the likes of HTC and Apple at the top end of the market. But does the Galaxy S have the tools to compete with the big guns of the mobile phone world?
The overall design of the Galaxy S will win the phone many fans right from the start. Measuring 122.4 x 64.2 x 9.9mm, the handset looks sleek and stylish. The smart black finish of the phone helps to achieve this, as does the remarkably wafer thin depth of the device. The screen technology used in the handset is a major factor behind this slimline look. The Galaxy S uses a very high quality Super AMOLED display. Standard AMOLED screen uses a panel for the display and then overlay this with a second sheet which is touch sensitive, giving you the touchscreen facility. Super AMOLED combines these two sheets into one, dramatically reducing thickness. Dimensions are not the only area that this technology improved. Black levels are increased as is the viewing angle on the screen, ultimately improving visibility in sunlight. The screen really is the stand out feature on this phone. Capable of displaying a 480 x 800 WVGA resolution, it measures 4" and produces a superb quality image, regardless of whether you are viewing text or video. Samsung have incorporated there own user interface into this handset, named TouchWiz. Adding a little bit of fun to proceedings, this also offers very functional features such as the smart unlock system. Letters of the alphabet can be assigned to certain phone functions. When in lock mode, drawing this letter on the screen launches the pre determined feature.
Samsung are a truly multi media company, and the features on offer on the
Samsung Galaxy S are very well specified. Numerous formats of audio files are supported, and combined with the ever handy 3.5mm stereo jack, the phone performs perfectly as a portable audio player. If you are worried as to whether you shelves full of albums will fit onto the phone then you need not. The device comes with 8GB or 16GB of internal memory, and should this not prove adequate enough then a micro SD card slot allows for additional cards to be added up to 32GB. A 5 mega pixel camera is included which can also shoot video in high definition. Film is captured at 720P resolution at an outstanding frame rate of 30 per second. DNLA compatibility allows for the footage to be streamed directly to compatible computers and televisions. Given the large volume of smartphones currently available, the Galaxy S rightly stands out amongst the crowd thanks to the excellent Super AMOLED screen along with a multitude of other great features.
