Contemporary forms of participation are hard to quantify and foreign to leaders who were trained back in the day when, as Seth Godin has observed, "organizations had walls." That is to say, participation 2.0 is creating a new set of rules, questions, possibilities, and challenges for tapping employees' potential.
The rules of participation have changed and those who understand how to invite, coordinate, and encourage participation are thriving. Those who are in denial or just too stubborn to respond are suffering. Participation 2.0 means that it's "do or die time."
