The Original Pancake House - The Forks, Winnipeg

I love The Pancake House. When we decide to treat ourselves to breakfast out, this is typically the first choice. The prices are decent for the large portions you get. And you never feel rushed out of the restaurant, like some places seem to do. We decided to go to the one at The Forks Restaurant for the first time. It's closer than the others, and The Forks offers a range of other activities you can enjoy before or after your meal.
This Pancake House is split into two sections. A "normal" little restaurant area, and an all glass atrium type area. The two areas combined would create a restaurant smaller than the city's otherrestaurants. The atrium area is great for those who wish to view the nearby outdoor going-ons as well as soak in a little bit of sunshine. On this particular day, the atrium area was a little too heated. Sweltering, actually. I needed an extra napkin just to wipe the sweat off my face. We didn't enter the other side on this day, so I can not comment on the heating situation over there. Nor theambiance.
Althoughboth sections were packed when we arrived, the wait to be seated was short. About three minutes. Which is excellent for Sunday brunch times. However, the too-make-uppedhostess left something to be desired. Fail number one: We initially stood by the entrance to the "normal" restaurant side. Peeking in and deciding if we wanted to risk the potential waiting time. I do recall someone speaking behind us, but with the bustle of people in and out of the market's main doors behind us, Idisregardedthe noise as something not really pertaining to me. It took a passing server to point out the hostess standing about six feet behind us. Fail number two: Unlike any other hostess I have encountered, who's job it is to seat you with the required number of menus, this hostess couldn't be bothered. She just sort of pointed you in the general direction of the table you are to take. In our case, it was a table that wasn't quite clean yet. A staff member was still in the process of removing the dishes from the previous guests. So instead of sitting in the waiting area, waiting for my table to be free, I was left standing in the middle of the little atrium while the table was being cleared and wiped down. During our meal, I noted a couple being ushered into the atrium by the hostess, and heard her giving directions on how to get to the table that was tucked around a partition and in the far corner. Again, isn't a hostess supposed to escort you to your table? Fail number three: I'd like to mention again the lack of menus provided by the hostess. You're left sitting there until your waitress comes around, at which point she takes your drink order and asks if you would like a menu. Good thing ThePancake House has a short and basic drink menu.
The food tasted like any other of their restaurants. I am sure they all use the same pre-fab mixes to make theirbreakfastitems. But it was obvious to me that my meal was left under heating lamps just a little too long. I like my eggs sunny-side up. I love the drippygooey-ness of the yolk running all over my toast. Mmmmmm... Sometimes theeggsare a little over-cooked, and the yolk is a little too firm around the edges. That I can live with. These eggs had started to congeal. Sunny-side-uppers know what I'm talking about. That sticky, glue-like substance that begins to replace your perfect sunny-side yolks when you leave them just a little too long. The french toast had begun to go soggy, as were the hashbrowns. The salt and sugar were clumpy with humidity.Althoughit doesn't change the taste of the products, it's not a very appetizing thing to discover in a restaurant that serves them in non-tamper-proof containers.
Aside from these let-downs, the service was good. The servers were prompt, friendly, and attentive. One thing I appreciated was that your server was not the only server to refill your coffee. All the servers in the area attended to the coffee needs of all the guests, thereby ensuring your cup was always full. Another thing to note was the wait time for your bill. Although they didn't make you feelrushedout the door by slapping your bill on the table before you've finished your last bite, they did keep them handy. I always ask for the bill a little early, as there is typically a bit of a wait for it to come. Not in this case. When our server came by near the end of our meal to see if we wanted anything else, I asked for the bill. Expecting, as typical, for the bill to then arrive a few minutes after we finished our meal. She pulled the bill out of a stack and deposited it on the table for us. Not sure how others feel, but for me, when I'm ready to leave a restaurant I don't want to wait another ten minutes for the damn bill. So this little detail was much appreciated.
Although my experience here wasn't up to par with what I am used to, I would visit it again. If, for no other reason, because it does make for a very nice day out with your special someone. We ate, went on a boat tour, and browsed the kiosks. Normally we would also take a walk on the river path, but unfortunately it was a little too flooded. The servicewas great (minus the hostess), and the food not so horrible that the rest of the day couldn't make up for it. I would also go again just to see if, perhaps, they were having an off day. Sometimes your favorite restaurant, that you have visited a million times before, will have a day so off that you almost question going again. Should we go again, I will be sure to post an updated review to let y'all know if off-days are their typical days.
