The Pros And Cons Whether To Install Vinyl Siding By Yourself
Whether or not to install vinyl siding on the exterior of your residence is a big decision to make
. Vinyl siding is the number one siding being installed in the United States and Canada today.
Look around at homes in your area for homes that have vinyl siding. Check out the decorative trim that was installed and the colors. You may want to check with some of the home owners to see if they were able to install vinyl siding on their own; or if they hired a contractor.
Ask the home owner what was the name of their contractor, and if he was certified in vinyl siding installation. Were they happy with the contractor? Check if the contractor did anything that upset them. Did he get the installation done in time?
Now you need to get some siding samples in different colors and textures. You may even want to get a few of the insulated siding samples to look at. If you decide to go with an insulated vinyl siding, remember it will raise the R-value of your home. This will save energy costs, which is like putting money in your pocket. When you consider the color for your siding and trim, keep in mind the color fade ration.
The color fade ratio is how a dense color like Forest Green will fade at a faster rate when exposed to UV rays, then a neutral color like Sandstone.
Once you have decided on the type of vinyl siding you want installed, contact some of the certified installation contractors that others have given to you. Ask them for some suggestions and ideas, they have worked in the vinyl siding field for years and may have some ideas. You should check with three or four of the contractors for bids and samples. That will give you good selection to investigate.
Go to your local hardware or lumber store to obtain samples of the siding also. While there check to see if theyre showing you how to install the vinyl siding. They might have literature, books, and CDs explaining the process to you.
Get a bid on the supplies that you will need to install vinyl siding on your home. You should get a few extra feet of siding just in case an error is made in the amount of siding that is needed for your project. Remember to get Greenguard to protect the underside of the siding and allow moisture to escape, Tyvek tape, screws, nails, J channels, and any other materials you may need.
Look at all of the bids and estimates that you have accumulated. If you go with a bid that was provided by the certified installation contractors, the installation of the vinyl siding will be done correctly. It would also be done in a timely matter keeping your neighbors from having to deal with the hassle longer than necessary. If you install the vinyl siding yourself, you will save the contractors installation fee but end up using time that could be spent doing more important things.
