Anger is a normal human emotion. In fact, mild anger can sometimes be useful to express strong feelings and deal with situations. Anger affects people in different ways. If anger is expressed in harmful ways, or persists over a long period of time, then it can lead to problems in relationships at home and at work and can affect the overall quality of your life. Number one: Observe for your hot buttons. Hot buttons are things that trigger a strong emotional reaction in us. Ask yourself these questions: What type of incident, situation, or person typically pushes your hot buttons? What are you doing when it happens? What are other people doing? Where are you? Who are you with? How tired or stressed are you?
Number two: Analyze your pattern, and implement some changes. Ask yourself what you're thinking when you get mad. What judgments are you making? After analyzing things, we should then change the way we think and talk about our problems. We should be able to recognize and accept our hot buttons. We should challenge them, and then change them by creating a new way of thinking about them.
Number three: Divert your attention and refocus on other things. Do something that gets your mind off the situation. Go for a brisk walk if you can, or engage in any other physical activity. Listen to your favorite music, do yoga, or even read a motivational book.
Number four: Find a blank sheet of paper and write down your frustrations, unhappiness, and disappointing emotions. After doing so, throw this paper away, along with all of those negative emotions. Number five: Think positive. Most of our hot buttons are based on what Albert Ellis calls "awfulizing". When things don't go our way, we think, "It's awful!" Therefore, along with other ways to deal with anger is to think in a positive way.
