Beginners Guide to Buying a Static Caravan
Beginners Guide to Buying a Static Caravan
Owning a caravan holiday home in your favourite location can be a worthy investment. But what can you expect for your money and where do you buy your holiday home from? Shield Total Insurance, one of the UK's fastest growing providers of holiday home and static caravan insurance, give some sound advice on making your dream come true.
Many people are looking at UK holiday options and more particularly, holiday static caravan ownership as a great value, flexible alternative to holidaying abroad. Some still think static caravans' are like those from the early 70's when sites and holiday homes were basic. Things were simple: gas lights and small oven, plus you would only use it from May to mid-October as insulation back then wasn't the best. It's all changed now!
There are great choices in static caravans (or holiday homes as they are now called), with prices for new units starting from only 14,000. Don't forget though the price "landed" i.e. direct from the factory and then siting on the holiday park, can be significantly different depending on the park operator's charges for this service.
Spending 25,000 to 40,000 will bring you into the luxury class of holiday home. New modern interior designs play a big part, with better specifications including double glazing and quality fittings. Some will also be built to residential park home standards so can be lived in all year round, park owner's site licence permitting!
Check what's on offer from manufacturers' websites. If you want more choice, visit one of the many shows where manufacturer's staff are directly at your disposal and also park owners who may have spare plots in an area where you are looking at. Outdoor shows also give you the chance to imagine what the unit will be like once on a pitch.
Looking for the right model may involve a trip to a holiday home dealership where choice and budget will be well catered for. There are some excellent set ups where sales staff can point you in the right direction. Try to keep within budget though and look at the holiday home with a longer term view to ownership than say a car.
The thousands of UK holiday parks offer both locations and facilities for every taste. How far do you want to travel, say after a long working week? Seaside or countryside retreat? Look at the parks in your chosen area and the facilities offered as this will affect ground rent. Are children allowed? What about pets? Can you sub-let? Is there off-road parking? Can you add decking? Do you need to upgrade your unit every 10 years? (Some park owners may allow older units to remain, provided they are kept in good serviceable condition).
Many parks offer a sense of community where other home owners will keep an eye out for anything suspicious. The park may have both CCTV and security barriers and some homes have alarms fitted. For complete peace of mind, you shouldn't forget to buy static caravan insurance. When the park closes for the end of season, make sure to take home any valuables. Also check that your static caravan insurance covers you against theft and storm. Some parks may be exposed to high winds, and your static caravan insurer will usually stipulate that the unit is anchored down, so this should be included in the pitching fees for your new holiday home. During the winter period, don't forget to turn your water off and drain the system where possible in case of burst pipes.
Taking our advice we hope that your holiday home experience will be an enjoyable one, offering breaks for many years. For great value, low cost static caravan insurance why not visit Shield Total Insurance's website today and check out our renewal price beater guarantee offer.
