The Smart Goal Setting System
There are five steps to SMART goal setting
There are five steps to SMART goal setting. And it just so happens that they all start with each of the letters in the word "smart." That is why this acronym works so well for remembering how to set good goals. It's easier to do than you may think too.
SMART is an acronym for following this procedure of goal setting that will allow you to set effective ones each and every time. This is what the acronym stands for:
S - Specific
M - Measurable
(A)ttainable
(R)ealistic
"T" stands for timely.
Each of these steps will now be explained in further detail so you will understand exactly how to set good goals. By the time you finish reading this article, you'll not only understand what consists of a good goal, you'll be able to set them for yourself and teach others to do the same.
The first thing to consider about a goal is whether or not it is specific. If your goal is not specific, you will never be able to actually reach it since it'll be more of a concept than a goal. So rather than setting a goal to "be rich, " try setting a goal for a specific dollar amount that if you had that much, you'd consider yourself to be rich.
But even if you have a specific goal, that is not enough in itself. Your goals must also be (M) measurable. If your goals are not measurable, then you you'll never know if you've reached it or not. So instead of "to lose weight in the form of fat, " it should be more like "to lose 30 lbs of weight in the form of fat."
Next, your goals must actually be attainable. If your goal is not attainable, then you will obviously never be able to achieve it - so it would be a bad goal to set. A goal of having $1 million dollars is attainable, technically; but you must actually be able to come up with a plan for making that much money. Otherwise...
The goal must also be realistic. If you have set a goal for yourself to become a millionaire by tomorrow, you've failed at this one. It's true that this goal would be specific, measurable, and attainable (since it's not impossible - after all, you could win the lottery or something), but it is obviously not realistic. Don't set unrealistic goals for yourself because you'll be setting yourself up for failure right from the beginning if you do.
Lastly, your goals have to have a deadline - they must be timely. This is one of the most important criteria for a good goal because it does two things. First, it gives you a way to start planning what you need to do and by when in order to reach your goal by the date chosen. Second, it provides you with a way to decide for sure whether or not you've achieved your goal, since when that date comes you'll be able to look at your results up to that point and compare it against the measurable aspect of your goal. And it also instills within you a greater sense of urgency, and a date for when you should review your goals and change them or set new ones. This helps them to remain in your mind constantly, and helps you work towards them more consistently.
