Why should you learn conversational hypnosis? People often talk of the gift of the gab or the art of persuasion

. We are fascinated by films in which people seem to have a kind of natural charisma and this seems to allow them to get anything they want. Believe it or not, this is a technique that people can actually learn, known as conversational hypnosis.

Conversational hypnosis differs from the more conventional direct hypnosis in that you do not talk about feeling sleepy or issue commands. It is believed that we often go into natural trance states anyway, whether we are focusing on a task or waiting to get on the bus. This is normally when if we are interrupted we talk about drifting off or forgetting where we are.

With conversational hypnosis, we are trying to induce this state in order to achieve something. In business terms, it would be mainly focused on overcoming objections. A good technique for this is noting what a person says and establishing a rapport saying how you agree with them. However you can also use confusion techniques, subliminal gestures and movements that can put a person on a less sure mental footing.

For example while talking with someone you can use tricks like pointing to temporarily distract them or a small frown to indicate a person making a subconscious mistake. As you attempt to induce a hypnotic state, using hypnotic theme words like relaxation and trance can help subconsciously induce a person to becoming more open and suggestive.

However it is not just the words but the tone in which they are delivered. At all points, it is about maintaining confidence and control. Bringing in so called hot words can direct someone to an emotional state. For example, the word baby is more emotionally powerful than infant. There are also certain words that if used in the right way a person can be induced into a state. Words such as focus, amazement, deep and fascinate will help put people into the right state of mind.

It is important to recognise when a person is in a trance state, as this can waste time if you have already persuaded them. One method is to encourage people to move their head down and give them a small nudge downwards to emphasize their stance.

An active solution can be achieved by an emotional trigger such as a childhood problem. If they had a fear of noise as a child, it is likely to manifest in some way as an adult. This is not a simple process and will take some time to achieve, as there may be more than one trigger. The transform part of the formula comes when a solution is found for the problem. This process can not be rushed and the practitioner must be certain that this has been achieved.

If on the other hand they want to become better sales people, then the COMILA formula would be more appropriate. There are numerous videos on the internet that illustrate this kind of technique, using positive images like keys, butterflies emerging from a chrysalis and an emphasis on a positive mental attitude. This is also the case with techniques like the LIFE checklist.

Erickson used these techniques until late into his life, when he developed post polio syndrome. Confined to a wheelchair, he eased his symptoms with his own self hypnosis. It seems ironic to use Erickson as a metaphor, but his powers of persuasion are a good analogy for what can be achieved with conversational hypnosis.
