Finally the Apple iPhone 4 has arrived, amidst an unprecidented level of media activity. This latest update not only sees the usual tweaking of features but also a total overhaul on the design of the handset itself.

When you first pick up the iPhobe 4, despite the difference in design to previous models, the unit still maintains the solid and well built feel that we have come to expect. The fact that it is a fraction heavior than the 3GS adds to this feeling, rather than the cheap feel some manufacturers have achieved by constantly reducing the weight of the handsets. Part of this is explained by looking at the materials that Apple has used in the construction of the phone. Gone is the glossy plastic back and in its place you will find a single sheet of glass (the same glass that is used on the front of the unit). Pessimists amongst you will immeadiately state that this surely makes the phone more prone to damage, but this glass however has been chemically treated to make it not only incredibly tough but also much more resistant to scratches than you would expect. Add this to the fact that it also gives the phone a sleek and expensive look and you will get the idea that this new model is a bit more than the usual annual update. A neat looking stainless steel band is sandwiched between the two glass sheets, not only acting as the antenna but also helping with the top end appearance. The fact that this band works as the antenna means less space is needed inside the actual unit, reducing the overall depth of the phone to a miniscule 24% less than the 3GS.

With regards to call quality, the iPhone 4 performs better than any other handset currently available. A second microphone has been added to this new model to aid noise cancelling, so even when speaking to somebody with a lot of background noise present, the call is still audible and very clear. Perhaps one of the best new features is "FaceTime", Apples twist on Vvideo calling. Instantly you may think that this format has been dead in the water for many years now, but that was due to the restrictions of using such a system on a cellular network, pictures appeared jumply and sound stuttered. Although "FaceTime" relys upon both users having an iPhone 4 and an WiFi internet connection, they results are superb with brilliant audio and video thanks to the new secondary front camera on the phone, with its focal length optimised for use at arms length.
