Because modern society had highly embraced and accepted divorce, the stigma that came along with it no longer exists today. Some experts study divorce to find out what really causes it. Gottman, a divorce specialist, published his study about the two major reasons why divorce occurs. According to him, marriage with at least 7 years with pre-existing problems left unsolved and relationships without any intimate communications seem to get dissolved.

Human behavior is also a factor why divorce happens. To some psychologists, divorce is related to some personal issues such as infidelity, lack of commitment, lack of time and anger management, and other negative emotions that the partner fails to communicate to the other. These things exist because people, most especially Americans, have a high regard to their self-independence. This means priding oneself that he or she can solve a problem without any help and therefore waits for a long period of time to solve the actual problem. This causes the relationship to gradually intensify minor issues and flare up until it is already difficult to solve.

Statistics show that marriages ranging from zero to four years old have the highest rate of divorce that is 87% that has high relationship with women who had divorced parents. This is why children who have history of parental divorce will have greater chances on getting divorced with their own marriages in the future.

Currently, United States does not hold the highest divorce rates but it remains steadily high. The common notion that divorce causes societal problems is yet to be proven until now.
