For example, since the post-war era, Italian cinema has been thriving with the masterpieces once generated by authors such as Federico Fellini and Vittorio de Sica, and most recently, with works by Giuseppe Tornatore and Gianni Amelio, just to mention two world currently renowned filmmakers.
Same thing goes for Spanish directors such as the great Pedro Almodovar and Alejandro Amenabar, or the wonderful Brazilian master Walter Salles, and, of course, the Japanese genius Akira Kurosawa.
And what about literature? Of course English narrative and poetry is a universe in itself that's well worth exploring in depth but now the problem seems to be the lack of French fiction among others- being translated and published in English.
The facts are right there: only three percent of the books published in English are by foreign writers, while thirty percent of the European market is composed by English speaking authors.
The problem is that this becomes a lose-lose situation. While authors aren't able to reach the audiences they deserve, readers face a limited selection of titles that only reflect what's going on in the English speaking part of the world.
And as the works of Umberto Eco, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Mario Vargas Llosa, Antonio Tabucchi, Jose Saramago, among others, are subject to a solid and steady French translation to make their prose more accessible in European libraries, in the United States and Great Britain the very same contemporary literary masters here listed just don't seem to be that popular.
One can just hope that with the growing popularity of e-readers, such as Kindle and, of course, the iPad, this situation will improve in the coming years. The reality is authors and their publishers have to do a lot more than cross their fingers on this one.
