Tips For Camping In Cold Weather

Late fall and winter time camping may not sound fun

, but with the right gear many people look forward to this time period of camping. Besides escaping the crowds of campers during the summer time many activities still exist when camping during these colder temperatures. Early on leaf watching is enjoyed by many following by cross country skiing, ice fishing, or even ascending ice waterfalls with picks. Hiking can also be enjoyed during the winter just as summertime in areas that do not receive deeper snow falls.

Planning for cold weather camping is very important as hazardous temperatures and condition can exist during these colder months. Make sure to properly research the location, potential hazards, and the location you will be visiting. Heavier duty tents are must for this time period along the sleeping bags that are rated for colder temperatures. White gas, gasoline, or propane camping stoves should also be considered versus butane stoves that fail to operate when temperatures dip below 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

When planning a winter time camping trip make sure to research snow levels that exist at the camp site, type of snow such as powder, slush, or ice packed, experience level of the group camping with, size of group, and any special elevation concerns. Also make sure to plan ahead for slower travel conditions that typically exist during the winter.

Having the right shelter that is designed for winter time camping is of course very important for this type of camping. Tents used should be rated for 4 seasons or especially for winter time camping. These types of tents will have stronger poles, heavier rainflies, and materials that are meant to operate in cold temperatures. The ability to shed snow is also important when choosing a tent for cold weather camping.

Choosing the right clothing to protect your body and skin from cold weather is very important to avoid frost bit and hypothermia. Dressing in complete layers is the best method to stay warm during different levels of activity. Avoiding excessive perspiration is also important as damp clothing has very poor insulation qualities. Clothing with wool blends or synthetic material designed for cold weather should be considered. Cotton garments should always be avoided as cotton has a tendency to absorb water making it a very poor insulator. Don't forget to bring along a hat, face mask, and several pairs of gloves or mittens. Boots that are rated for the temperatures that are faced are also very important and even a spare pair of boots is recommended.
