Toning shoes have received a massive amount of press over the past few months

. From the advertising campaign featuring Kelly Brooke to Joe Montana's endorsement of toning shoes in general, these shoes have gone from strength to strength.

The claims made by these brands are based on the fact that the footwear is designed to have an unstable sole which forces you to find a balance point. Forcing your body to find a new balance point, will, it is argued, make your muscles work harder thereby increasing the amount of calories burnt during exercise. Toning shoe manufactures also claim that this will have a beneficial impact on the muscle tone of the legs and lower back.

Several studies have been done by research groups associated with the leading toning shoe brands, all of which, unsurprisingly point towards how beneficial the toning shoe is. However, the American Council on Exercise (ACE) have completed their research in this area and the results are not good for the likes of MBT, Skechers and Reebok. The report states that "there is no support to claim that these shoes will help wearers exercise more intensely, burn more calories or improve muscle strength and tone".

Neither Skechers, Reebok nor MBT have responded directly to this report, however, the swathes of testimonials, celebrity support (both paid and non-paid) for these products and the steady rise in their sales shows that customers are not taking notice of these reports, but are instead trying them for themselves. Added to this customers are saying that spending the extra money on a fitness trainer/shoe encourages them to be more active. In conclusion, it would be suggestable to try a pair of these shoes for yourself, because at present, the research regarding their performance is inconclusive.
