Transcription Career: An Introduction to Your Options
Transcription is putting spoken words into its written form
. This seemingly simple task is very much in-demand. Doctors need their spoken notes during medical procedures to be written down. Those in the legal profession need the arguments and testimonies during court proceedings to be written down as well. Company officers who concluded a meeting need the items they have discussed to be documented in writing. A journalist who interviews a celebrity would need the questions and answers in writing. A school for the deaf would need instructional videos and other educational materials with an audio component to be written instead. These are just some of the needs that create a demand for transcription. The needs for transcription are diverse and the sheer volume has spawned an entire industry, and with an industry, careers as well.
Medical Transcription alone is a field that is already worth tens of billions of dollars a year and is expected to continue to grow and need more professionals. Demand is a given as hospitals need their patients' medical history to be stored and filed, either physically or electronically. Complete medical records including doctors' notes are a must for insurance claims processing. A medical transcription career is a specialized field that pays above-average transcription fees. A Medical Transcriptionist would have to use certain formats for different types of medical records. He should also be, knowledgeable in medical jargon and can work quickly as medical records have to be updated in a timely manner. Because of these medical transcriptionists usually go into training first for six months to two years before they can start transcribing. Although speech recognition technology is already employed by some hospitals to reduce the volume for medical transcription, the technology is still far from being perfect and human medical transcriptionists are still needed to check on the work of speech recognition software and edit as necessary.
Legal transcription is another field where transcription is an industry need and is part of the standard operating procedures especially during court proceedings. However, it also requires the transcriptionist to be knowledgeable in legal jargon before he or she can be an effective transcriptionist.
Both medical and legal transcription careers are financially rewarding and require some amount of specialized training, not only for the transcriptionist to learn the jargon of the field but also on using the proper format. Also, medical and legal transcriptionists are exposed to confidential information and care should be taken to ensure that personally identifiable information and other information should be kept secret.
Another option for a career in transcription is that of a general transcriptionist. Unlike medical or legal transcription, general transcription does not require specialized training, and the information dealt with are not as confidential in nature, making it easier to be outsourced to companies. Companies are in turn not restricted in keeping information stored only in specific hard drives or servers, but can easily get transcriptionists working from home without the risk of confidentiality breaches, thus making general transcription a very feasible and accessible job to most work at home professionals.
