Tweeting with the TV - The Future of Multifunctional Technologies
For entertainment and work, the computer continues to be an integral part of our daily lives
. However, as technology advances and the world becomes ever more connected, many household devices, such as the humble television, are being transformed into multi-tasking devices of the future.
With the release of HDTVs featuring built-in Wi-Fi and Ethernet, you can access the Internet whilst watching a favorite television show. This provides several types of multimedia functionality. Computer hardware manufacturers have been producing high-resolution screens for many years but until recently they were too pricey for the domestic and personal market. But as with everything, production costs lowered and large-screen HDTVs were ready for the home market.
Now, manufacturers are including new functions and features for your TV this process. Considering the number of devices we have to use daily, streamlining our lives has become an alluring selling point for the technology companies. Phones used to simply be phones, but now they can access the Internet, have a camera built-in and may be used to listen to the radio. The Internet is a key factor in making this possible, continuing to push the potential of technology further.
Websites are itching to take advantage of the new opportunities. National broadcasters are offering online streaming through televisions and websites such as Twitter and Youtube can now be accessed with a television. However, features such as social book marking will no doubt be available soon. Imagine being able to save favorites online and access them all without turning on the computer. Personalization and customization have been key to the success of the Internet. Imagine being able to design, build and publish a personalized homepage and then access it by a button on your remote control called "my homepage".
Despite most people welcoming such technological enhancements, some people object to the convergence of so many features into one appliance. Reasons range from wanting to "switch off and get away from always being connected to the world" to just wanting to "use the TV as a form of escapism".
Nevertheless, conventional computers arguably offer the best Internet experience. But the magic is within discovering new functionalities in traditional objects.
The question arises then: should manufacturers embrace innovation or stick with tradition? Is this an indication of the advancement of technology into every part of our lives?
