Two New Plans Debut for Medicare Supplement

Two New Plans Debut for Medicare Supplement

June 1, 2010 will see considerable changes in the Medicare Supplemental Insurance system, with two new policies debuting and four plans eliminated from the roster. These significant modifications will be implemented on the aforementioned date, with the emergence of plans M and N at the forefront of these amendments.

Medicare recipients have often been unable to obtain sufficient aid in terms of health care costs with the original Medicare system, giving rise to gaps between many patients' total medical bills and their policies' coverage. The Medical Supplemental Insurance system came about to address this disjoint by providing additional coverage and added medical benefits towards any member's medical costs. This system supplements original Medicare plans to make them more useful to its members.

Medical Supplemental Insurance Guide publisher James Preston advises Medicare members to educate themselves further on the modifications made to current Medigap policies, especially with the insertion of Plans M and N and the elimination of a few existing plans. However, he also notes that plans obtained prior to the first of June will remain as-is, if the member does not want to make changes to his or her Medicare policy.

Medigap Plan M provides a Part A deductible coverage of fifty percent, and no coverage with the deductible for Part B. Part B does not include coverage, although members will not have to co-pay for doctor's office visits once the Part B deductible is met.

Medigap Plan N is similar to plans under Medicare Advantage, with coverage of a hundred percent of deductible Part A and zero coverage for Part B. The non-coverage of the Part B deductible, however, is mitigated by Part B co-insurance. Here, visits to the doctor's office need a co-pay of twenty dollars, with a maximum charge of fifty dollars for trips to the emergency room if a patient is not admitted.

Some of the alterations currently being initiated include the removal of benefits that go towards precautionary care and home recovery, while excess medical cost benefits will move up to a hundred percent for Medigap Plan G. Hospice benefits will also be integrated into the main benefits of Plans A up to G in the same system.

These newer plans are widely forecasted to become viable choices for seniors, with standardized policies that enable carriers to require lower premium payments, making the competition for insurance in the health care industry even more aggressive.

For more information about changes such as Plans M and N, visit various online resources or consult with your local insurance provider.
