The average person may think there is no research on the subject of hypnosis
, whether it is to stop smoking or for any other therapeutic purpose.
Much of the evidence is hidden away in obscure scholarly journals that are usually only seen by the medical profession so it is little wonder that people say there is no conclusive research to prove that hypnosis works!
Certainly it is has been a challenge to do the sort of double blind repeatable trials demanded by the scientific community simple because people are not machines.
It is difficult to get large trials done because lets face it, trials are expensive and there is no Big Money to be made by a pharmaceutical company from natural, safe hypnosis!
It can also be difficult to standardise hypnosis treatments in the same way that a dose of a new drug can be standardised.
This does not mean hypnosis doesnt work or cannot work for you!
John Gruzelier, a psychologist at Imperial College in London. Says that Hypnosis is more than just a party trick, it measurably changes how the brain works.
In fact studies indicate that there is actually a biological mechanism underpinning the experience of hypnosis. You can see it working in the brain.
Dr Gruzeliers study chose 12 people who were highly susceptible to hypnosis and 12 people with low susceptibility. They all completed a set task in an fMRI scanner under normal or un-hypnotised conditions and then again under hypnosis.
Without hypnosis the all subjects showed no difference in performance, but under hypnosis, the highly susceptible subjects showed significantly more brain activity in an area of the brain shown to respond to errors and evaluate emotional outcomes, and the area related to higher level cognitive processing and behaviour than did those with lower susceptibility.
Peter Naish, of the UK's Open University, says that this moves the understanding of hypnosis away from the popular misconceptions created by showy stage hypnotists...towards a technique that has moved towards evidence-based treatments,"
He says Gruzelier's work is showing for sure that the brain is doing quite different things under hypnosis than in normal everyday existence."
Clinical trials of therapeutic hypnosis are also starting to confirm its potential benefits. Christina Liossi, apsychologist at the University of Wales in Swansea, recently conducted a study of 80 cancer patients aged between 6 and 16.
She found that those under hypnosis experienced far less pain during treatments than the control children, who simply talked to the researchers normally.
Hypnosis is real and its not just simple relaxation either.
Other researchers also found that hypnosis has a real brain effect when analyzed doing certain activities on brain scans under hypnosis.
Dr. Michael Heap, psychologist, concluded that their studies backed the theory that hypnosis primes the brain to be open to suggestion. Study leader Dr. William McGeown stated:
This shows that the changes were due to hypnosis and not just simple relaxation. Our study shows hypnosis is real.
Hypnosis IS real and my experience with hypnosis to stop smoking confirms this.
Some are more susceptible than others however you can learn to go into hypnosis. It is something that can be practiced and improved. That is likely why some people are successful with quit smoking hypnosis in just one session and others take a bit more time.
