It is interesting to consider how employers' attitudes have changed over hundreds of years. Where once upon a time the thought of a minimum wage or workers' conditions would have been laughable, now we hear of employers paying for a masseuse to come into the office to give everyone a massage once a week.

But have we really come so far as to genuinely care about the well-being of the people who work for us?

It is fair to say that the greater the perk the more stressful the job or the more demanding the employer. Anyone who has seen the movie The Firm, based on a popular John Grisham novel, will notice this correlation. Perhaps employees would prefer to go home on time to their families than have a free gym membership? Perhaps instead of weekends away with work to European cities they would prefer to not take work home with them over the weekend?

In many cases, perks aren't perks at all then, they are just some kind of pay-off for the sacrifice that they individual is giving to the company and often these perks such as a bonding' weekend away, only serve to bring the individual closer to the company, making it a self-interested act anyway.

Employers who genuinely do care about the well-being of their staff know that the things that make a difference to them are making their lives at work more comfortable and making it possible to maintain a life outside of work. This can mean things as simple as buying an office fridge, so that staff can bring their own lunches (saving themselves money and helping them to make healthy choices) to introducing flexible working hours, so that people can arrive or leave early depending on family commitments or other events.

These are the things that make a difference.

It is important to note that for all the self-interested employers out there, there are kind-hearted ones who will be doing their best only to find that it is never enough and they are on the verge of being taken advantage of. It is better to make wise choices within your means and not extravagant ones.

Making the office environment a pleasant one helps. Too hot and too cold is uncomfortable. Small pleasures such as plants, a kettle and a radio if appropriate - can also help while away the hours for bored administrative staff.

A lack of natural light can have a negative impact on people's well-being without them realising what the cause is. If there is no natural light in your office, encourage people to get outside in their lunch breaks or at least make it possible for them to do so.

Whether you have any natural light or not, lighting is something that shouldn't be thought of in terms of an afterthought. Poor office lighting can be draining and tiring and even if you don't care about your staff's well-being just consider their productivity!

Commercial lighting is just as important as non-commercial lighting for the same reasons: good office lighting and commercial lighting will help people work better, feel better and help create a pleasant atmosphere for those potential clients and customers as well as your staff, and it is cheaper than several holidays in Europe!
