WHAT IS SNORING?

Although there may be other reasons for this unhealthy and quite annoying habit, scientifically speaking, snoring is a sound produced by our throat or the air pathways, that vibrate when air flows through it and from it. Actually, snoring can happen at any time of the day, as we sleep or nap, and not just at night.

Could snoring be something that most men encounter when they are having a good nights rest? Or is it a result of releasing exhaustion unconsciously?

TYPES OF SNORING

When someone snores in their sleep, changes sleeping positions and yet continues to snore, it is most likely that a serious snoring problem is affecting them. The type of snoring that leaves your mouth wide open tends to cause vibration in the tissues of the throat as you inhale and exhale through your mouth which creates a vibrating noise producing the snoring sound. Snoring when lying on your back is due to the way the lungs exhale the tiredness of your body; this causes rapid exhales and inhales that result in faster breathing leading to a vibration of the throat tissues much louder than normal.

CONTROLLED AND UNCONTROLLED FACTORS OF SNORING

The controllable factors that cause us to snore are smoking, alcohol, medications, sleeping position and postures, obesity and being overweight. Some other emotional, stress-related factors are not always consciously controllable and cause not only snoring, but could even lead to sleep apnea, which can be life-threatening!

MOST COMMON CAUSES OF SNORING

Having an improper sleeping position can cause a person to snore. A person's smoking history can also be a cause of snoring. The consumption of too many fatty and oily foods, which creates a fat deposit around the air tracks and pathways, will cause the throat to be rigid and a diminishing of the airflow; thus, when air passes through, it creates vibrations and snoring occurs. Certain types of medication can also be a cause of snoring.

WATCHING YOUR WEIGHT AND EATING HABITS TO AVOID SNORING

Cravings for junk foods are very hard to control, because once you see them, a switch in your mind turns ON, says I WANT THIS NOW! and you just have got to have it now. The simple method of using smaller bowls and plates has been psychologically proven to work when dieting and is very effective.

This might sound like something most of us heard when we were kids: Chew with your mouth closed! Amazingly enough, this simple change will make you chew at a slower pace and thus relax your jaw and facial muscles, and this can result in less probabilities of snoring. Of all meals in a day, dinner is usually the most tempting and irresistible meal ever; but, this is not good news for the health all those snoring people out there... AND their loved ones!

SO, WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE SNORING SEVERELY?

A few simple tips you can try immediately:

1.- Before lying on your bed, place an additional pillow to elevate the upper part of your body when you are asleep or, if you have one pillow, double it.

2.- It's normal enough to have one or two small shots of brandy before bedtime, if you drink alcohol, of course; if so, just make sure that your number of shots are limited! Dont end up gulping down half of the bottle alone and going to sleep, because this will obviously not do you any good.

3.- Also try to avoid eating any meals after 9 pm; if you cant resist it, have a light snack. Make sure its light, no fat or sugar! Your snoring is much more likely to decrease this way.
