The Great Depression was an undeniably awful period of time in our nations history. The word great is really just used here to signify the large extent to which the dire economic situation affected the American population in the 1920s. However, when we examine it more closely, perhaps the Great Depression actually was great in a way. Sort of one of those well-laugh-about-all-this-later situations. We certainly dont wish to trivialize or disrespect...more

Depression can strike anyone at any point in their life. It may be after suffering a tremendous loss, after giving birth, a divorce, or worse yet, it may just be chronic no matter what is going in your life. Whatever the case may be, depression is surmountable, and drugs/medications are not always necessary. Curing depression is a goal that can be achieved by putting a few pieces of a puzzle together. VITAMINS AND SUPPLEMENTSOne of the first steps to feeling better is to make sure you are taking a good daily multivitamin. The food that we buy at the grocery store is not as fresh as we may think it is, and therefore does not carry its full nutritional weight. Not one of us can get the daily recommended allowance of vitamins and minerals solely from the food we eat. So you will want a vitamin that will help offset this deficiency. Do some research online to find a multivitamin that will provide what you need daily, and that fits your budget. There is an herb called 5-HTP that is known to help with depression. It's very tough for someone to perform at his or her best when depressed. Many specialists, however, differ on the motive that depression occurs. Is it a low level of serotonin? A difficult upbringing? A tragic life event? All of the above? Truly, from my point of view, none of those factors can cause a long- or perhaps short-term drop in ones state of mind. There might well be a correlation between these factors and depression, however there's not a cause-and-effect relationship between them.As an illustration, my colleague, Dr. George Pransky, uses the following model: When it rains heavily, there's a good probability that umbrella usage can increase, and, at the same time, a smart chance that storm drains can overflow. Yet, nobody would insist that the reason storm drains overflow is as a result of people are using umbrellas, or vice versa. The link between depression and the above factors works in the similar way. Often, a person who has experienced a tragedy can become depressed and commonly their level of serotonin will drop. A dreadful event, though, cannot cause depression or a lack of serotonin. Solely ones feelings about the tragedy have the ability to do this. Simply...more
