When residents of Seawoods Estate shelled out Rs 5 crore for their dream homes, they were understandably taken in by the spacious homes, the view of the sea and the luxurious gardens dotting the landscape. But less than a year later, their houses are falling apart.

The sprawling complex, built by CIDCO, contains houses ranging from Rs 1.5 crore to Rs 5 crore, but those who paid up are already regretting their decision.

Take Kanchi Advanis spacious 4,000 square feet duplex on the 16th floor of building No 50 for example.

The ceiling in the living room has sprung leaks, every wall in the house is damp and, last week, a section of the ceiling in one of the bedrooms came crashing down a few feet away from where her eight-year-old daughter was sleeping.

I am left with just two bedrooms. Even the living room is leaking at several places and the rate at which problems are cropping up in the house, very soon we will be forced to move out, said Advani, a fashion designer, who owns a boutique in Vashi. She had moved into the house barely a year ago.

In the neighbouring building (No 51), even houses on the second floor have developed cracks and are leaking in several places. The paint on the walls in Tarun Aroras living room has worn off in less than a years time, all due to the seepage. Several tiles in the bathrooms, too, have come off.

The Mirror team went around several houses in the neighbouring buildings to find that the situation was no different. Even in buildings constructed a couple of months ago, seepage is evident. In fact, even houses that are still empty have pipes bursting in several places.

Desperate cries for repairs by the residents have fallen on deaf ears. We have made so many complaints to CIDCO but nobody has bothered to carry out repairs. After paying for the house through our nose we are regretting the decision, said Arora.

When Mumbai Mirror contacted the executive engineer in-charge of the project from CIDCO, he insisted that the leakages were due to massive alterations carried out by residents.

We have already sent notices to residents who have carried out alterations, he said. However, he refused to react when asked about pipes rupturing and roofs caving in. Also, he did not give any explanation for the fact that even houses in new buildings where residents are yet to move in have been affected.

The residents are understandably furious, with Advani saying that she felt she had been living in a shanty for the past couple of months.

At least if we had been living in a shanty, carrying out repairs would have been cheaper and easier.
