Ageing naturally - the new Taboo

I am a forty-eight year old woman, whoprobably has the face I deserve

. I've done my share of sun-bathing, partying and stress. I've used good products when I've been able to afford them, relied on baby lotion when not. And so, at forty-eight I have a fair number of wrinkles spreading outwards from my eyes, various other lines here and there and a face which is certainly slipping down off its bones slowly! All completely normal. So why is it when I look in the mirror, I feelreally miserable. Why have I tentatively lookedat prices of Botox and fillers, and why do I rush out and buy every new miracle pot of cream that comes onto the market?

The problem isthat these days, our culture just doesn't allow wrinkly women to be seen. All the images we are exposed to arecleaned up. Those disgusting wrinkles, lines and age-spots are airbrushed out, saggy bits are sucked upand youthful perfection is restored. We've reached a very odd time in society where womenwho look their age are made to feel that they've let themselves down and deserve to have fingers pointed at them.Yet how many of us really, truly want to go down the cosmetic route.Do we actually want a complete stranger injecting us with botulinum toxin every month, or filling our faces with some other unprounceable gunk. Or worse still, cutting pieces out of our faces and then stretching what remains back, and stapling it all together!AND, we are paying people to do this to us.

I feel very strongly that women need to take a step back and actually decide whether they are undergoing all these ridiculous treatments for themselves; or because they feel the need to be accepted by a pernicious society, which sees youth as the only beauty. Our forties should be a great time for women. Children are growing up, careers are forged, all those anxieties of youth are largely gone. We should be looking forward to a new phase in our lives, yet instead wegive ourselves a whole new set of worries about the way we are ageing. Ageing is the one sure thing in life, there is no cure. Even if we do fill, stretch and plump our faces beyond recognition, we should not fool ourselves into thinking we are somehow buying immortality.I think it is time women allowed themselves the pleasure and freedom to grow old without having to resort to expensive and invasive treatments. There are plenty of lovely, inexpensive products out there which can help us look good, if not twenty-one again. But then, we will never look twenty-one again. Leave youth to the young, they do it so much better.

In the hope that I can persuade other women tojoin me in facing the ageing process withoutsurgical modifications, I have set up a website called allgrownup.co. This isaimed at womenin and beyond their forties who want to age beautifully, but naturally. I really hope that if we all gang up, we can force society into seeing that we can still be beautiful; that we are intelligent, sentient people who shoul not have to subject our faces to ridiculous, distorting cosmetic procedures in order to feel accepted.
