Attractions In Amritsar A City Filled With Spirituality

The city of Amritsar, located in the northwestern part of India in the state of Punjab

, is one that is filled a mysticism and spirituality that one does not find in many other cities in the country. Due to its close proximity to Pakistan and its reputation as the heartland of Sikhs, Amritsar is a city that sports it own unique identity.

Perhaps the most important monument in Amritsar is the Golden Temple, which is the spiritual headquarters of the Sikh religion. The temple is referred to as Harmandir Sahib, which means the House of God, and which was built by Guru Ram Das, who is the fourth teacher of Sikhism. He is also credited with the establishment of the city of Amritsar, which underlines the importance of the Golden Temple in the region. The Golden Temple is also the most visited site in India, attracting more visitors than the Taj Mahal.

Located just a short walk outside of the Golden Temple is the Jallianwala Bagh Gardens which was the site of the Amritsar massacre in 1919, when British soldiers fired at a peaceful gathering killing 1579 people. The memorial was erected after Indias Independence in remembrance of those that died.

The Mata temple is a Hindu temple that is believed to have powers of granting fertility to women. The temple is a series of corridors and caves that are lined with mirrors and devotees navigate this labyrinth chanting prayers in hope of earning blessings from Lal Devi to whom the temple is dedicated.

Though Amritsar is a city that is filled many attractions and historic monuments, today it is also a modern city with a thriving commercial district that has shopping malls, offices and many a Amritsar luxury hotel. There are many centralized hotels in Amritsar such as Ista Amritsar, which offers travelers great access to the citys attractions as well as excellent accommodation.
