Bird Hunting Gear For Beginners
Every year you watch as the guys get suited up in their camouflage
, clean off their guns, and get ready for a great waterfowl hunt. Maybe this year you've decided you'd like to go along and take a turn at bagging some birds yourself. But you've never done it before. Where do you begin? If you're a beginner to hunting waterfowl, there are a few things that you should know before heading out on a hunt.
Before you begin anything, you're going to need the right gear. Quality equipment is key to having a successful hunt. For bird hunting you will, of course, need a good shotgun. If you're unsure about what kind is best, ask any experienced friends or check out bird hunting forums to see what people are recommending. One of the most important pieces of equipment on your hunt will be your waders. Without a good pair of waders, your hunting experience will be cold and miserable. For the best experience, get a high quality pair of well-insulated chest-high waders.
Of course in any hunting, concealment is key. When you head out on your first hunt, you'll want some light and warm camouflage clothing to keep you hidden. But make sure you get the right camo. Consider the area you want to hunt in. What is the terrain like? Green camouflage for waterfowl hunting is usually a mistake. Brown camo with patterns that match the area you will be hunting will be essential. The birds are smart. They will know when something looks out of place and potentially dangerous. Another part of concealment is your hunting blind. Next to your gun and decoys, this is your most important piece of hunting equipment. If the birds see you, the game is over. Like your camo, you should consider the territory when looking for a blind. Don't be afraid to use whatever vegetation is available around you to help conceal your blind.
As mentioned before, you will need decoys. Your decoys will be essential in the hunt. Start out with at least six or a dozen. You can add more as you become more comfortable and more experienced with the sport. Talk to experienced hunters about the best way to position your decoys. You've probably heard of people using callers to lure in birds. These can be very effective if you know what you're doing. However, most likely you will want to practice a few times before trying to use a call.
For the best hunting results, go on a hunting trip with an experienced guide. A seasoned duck or goose hunting guide can be the best way to introduce you to the sport. They know the best areas and can give you tips for every aspect of the hunt and help make your first hunting trip an experience to remember.
