How to deal with employees with bad attitudes

It is common knowledge that as more and more fresh college graduates enter the workforce; they just don't bring their youth vivacious energy or eagerness to learn into the office. Most of them also tag along their attitude with them. They think it is their prerogative to have six figure salaries, 4 weeks of vacation, and a corner office even before they have a chance to prove their salt's worth.

It is not surprising that these notions may seem preposterous to people who come from a different culture, generation, or mindset, there are many people who have attitudes that is not exclusively of entitlement which do not promote good will. As a matter of face many of these goal thwarting attitudes, are based pseudo sense of self-esteem.

As per the Webster's dictionary Self-esteem is a realistic respect for or favorable impression of oneself. However self-esteem sends one for a toss when one confuses potential with credentials. A lack of credentials can mislead the aptitude. It's very common to find college grads engaging in the idea that it's best to fake it till you make it and they indulge in a disposition that's in accordance to it, or mirroring, those people who have a winning manners, those who have actually achieved what they hope or have the potential to do.

Is this the case?

A recent survey of organizations which provide internships/apprentice positions shows that they prefer freshers with inquisitiveness, rather than snobbish attitude. Such goal upsetting attitude gets acts as a hindrance in learning, and building relationships.

It is easy to charm employers with potential and credentials, but a positive employee attitude is more often the top priority in employee characteristics that employers value. It is validated to such an extent that, employers are often found quoting that they prefer a less qualified or less experienced candidate who has great attitude and shows promise to be a good fit, over a candidate who is better qualified (i.e. is better on paper) but in possession of a bad attitude. They are ready to bargain. You receive a chance to expand and realize your potential.

A bad attitude is often considered heavier to carry and harder to handle. Even though it may be under the garb of a winner's attitude it is still considered, cumbersome and generally unpleasant. Employers tend to keep their distance, or that they bypass opportunities to work with you.


Many people in possession of such fake bad attitude are often unaware of this fact, even though some are aware but often they are found to be too pleased with themselves to do anything about it. Often they tend to compensate with their aptitude. They compete with those who lack credentials but do compensate by maintaining a positive attitude. However it is found that employers prefer a healthy balance of both aptitude and attitude instead of making a choice between them.

Sports, is one profession where attitude and aptitude combined make a lot of difference. It has a culture where winning is everything, and it is often considered that attitude takes a backseat to aptitude, or is that the real case?

A celebrated team player is one who is capable enough to put his needs and personal glory after that of his team. His value is because of his rarity. His athletic aptitude might not be a match to other players in the team; however it is his attitude which makes him the greatest. Both his presence and absence impacts all. He goes above and beyond the call of duty to do whatever it takes for winning.

Whatever heights or abysses we deal with in our lives are a direct result of both our aptitude and attitude. So it won't be considered unintelligent if we mend them both while we have chance to do so, just to doubly check that we reach wherever we want to.
