Having Panic Attacks While Driving?

As a sufferer of panic attacks one of the worst situations to be in when those attacks hit is while you are driving

. If you are a sufferer as well you can picture it, driving along the road and out of know where a panic attacks strikes. You are alone you can't hand over the wheel to anyone else and you fear for your physical and mental safety. Your pulse starts to speed up; you may sweat, have trouble breathing, or feel like you are going to pass out. This is a horrible situation to be in considering you are on the road and have to maintain control.

So the question is how do you stop a panic attack while you are driving? Fortunately, there are many ways to cope, but they can take practice and time to be able to use them effectively. If you do put into practice various methods of panic reduction, it has been shown to have a great recovery rate.

One method to use is the deep relaxation method. That may sound odd, because how can you deeply relax when driving? Well, it is a process that can be practiced at home and then utilized while driving. The catch here is practiced at home, it must be practiced often in order for it to work effectively and reduce your panic on the road.

To start the process of practicing deep relaxation you must find a place where you will not be interrupted and can lie down. You begin to relax you entire body starting from the feet up to your head. If there is any excess tension in an area you can focus on that more.

Once you are relaxed you can simply enjoy the feeling for a bit. You then want to assign a word or phrase such as "relax" or "peace" to that feeling. This will anchor the word with the feeling so that when you say the words in the future you will instantly relax.

Along with words that you can use for anchoring your relaxation response you can also use physical cues. For example, when practicing your deep relaxation at home you can put your thumb and index finger together. By doing this you have again anchored a response. The next time you are in you panic while driving you can put your thumb and index finger together and the relaxation will be there instantly.

Practice this daily for as long as you need to. The longer you practice the more effective it will become. Once you have mastered this technique, you can now use it when you have panic while driving on the road.

When panic creeps up on you when you are on the road you can now use your catchphrase such as "relax" or "peace" to retrigger the relaxation you experienced at home. Also, by adding the physical cues of putting your thumb and index finger together with your catchphrase, you will magnify results. This in turn will bring your panic attack either to a screeching halt or to a manageable level.
