Light Therapy for Depression
Natural light (sunlight) has been used for centuries to cure certain disorders in the body. In fact, it is considered very sacred and holy in some traditions. The power of light is many-fold. It can directly stimulate the nerves of the brain and bring about numerous chemical reactions and changes leading to different nervous signals. These signals in turn alleviate certain forms of stress, depression, anxiety, fear, etc.
Light therapy is very effective in treating seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, a condition seen in people who undergo a state of depression during winter seasons of the year. Depression, anxiety, lethargy, low self-esteem, a sudden increase in weight, abnormal eating patterns, sleeping excessively and difficulty in concentration are some of the symptoms observed.
Light therapy does not involve complex equipments and procedures. It is in fact one of the simplest methods to cure the disorder or decrease the severity. Here a small light therapy box is given to the patient. The box does not emit any specific rays. It emits light, which is similar to normal light. This light has a direct effect on the brain and brings about numerous chemical reactions in the nerves. A doctor's prescription is necessary for this treatment.
Place the box in front of your eyes first up in the morning as soon as you wake up. Make sure you do not place the light box too close to your eyes as this might damage the retina and cells leading to vision impairment. The light will produce certain chemical changes in your brain, which you do not perceive and in the process will help to relieve the condition.
