Plastic Surgeon Suggestions For Taking Care Of Incisions

Before you leave the office, it is important that you know what your plastic surgeon recommends when it comes to taking care of your incisions

. While there are some things that most medical professionals agree on when it comes to recovery, there are some things that will vary from physician to physician. Remember that first and foremost, you want to stick with your doctor's suggestions.

Keep It Dry

The thought of skipping out on a shower for an extended amount of time may not sound appealing. You are probably wondering whether or not this is really all that important and whether or not your plastic surgeon has ever had to go without a shower for a few days. The goal of avoiding water is to protect your incisions. Infection and other complications often occur when wounds get wet. When they remain wet for an extended amount of time, you can be sure that your recovery time will be extended.

Leave or Change the Bandages

Depending on the type of surgery, your plastic surgeon may request that you change your bandages the very next day. On the other hand, you may need to leave the same bandages on and let the doctor remove them at a later appointment. Either way, make sure that you follow these directions. Sometimes bandages need to be removed to check on an incision and make sure there are no obvious signs of infection. Also, changing the bandage ensures that the wound is kept clean and dry.

On the other hand, a doctor may want to remove the bandages him or herself. If the wound has started to heal and the bandage is attached to the scab, someone removing it quickly and without skill could cause more problems. It could open up the wound and start the bleeding again. Whatever the plastic surgeon requests of you, make sure that you follow those directions to the letter.

Follow Up Appointments

Don't make the mistake of assuming that the plastic surgeon is giving you the option for coming in for a follow up appointment. These appointments are usually mandatory. You want to show up and have a medical professional look over the incisions and the changes to your body as a whole. While the appointment is time consuming and could be potentially inconvenient, this is your first deterrent against complications like infections and continually open wounds.

This appointment is for your benefit and you can gain useful information and insight into what to expect over the next couple days, weeks and months. If you have questions about how things are progressing or you have any worries or concerns about your body, this is a great time to touch base with the doctor.
