Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse

Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse

Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse

Going on a road trip to Maine is a very nostalgic experience. There are many lighthouses to be seen. Lighthouses are amazing structures. They stand as a monument to the lighthouse keepers of the past who lived there and protected the mariners coming into port by keeping the beacon, the way home, going at all times. There are many stories of heroism courage, and downright intestinal fortitude of lighthouse keepers and their families that at all costs kept the light going so that those at sea could come home safely. No wonder there is so much symbolism and metaphorical use of lighthouses.

On a road trip one of the lighthouses to see in Maine is the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse. It is at the end of a breakwater that was built in 1888 to offset the danger of the high waves that would come into the unprotected harbor. In 1902 the break water and light were both updated. The breakwater was extended to more than a mile, and the lighthouse was built bigger as to better warn mariners that it is there. It is a 25 foot tower that is at the corner of a two story home. Its light is white and flashes every 5 seconds and can be seen 17 miles away. The lighthouse is beautiful at night and can be seen all along the Rockland waterfront. To see this lighthouse from U.S. highway 1 in Rockland follow Waldo Road and Samoset Road to the Marie Reed Breakwater Park. Visitors are allowed to walk out on the breakwater to the light.

Another lighthouse to see on a road trip is the Owls Head Lighthouse. This got its name because the rocks are formed into what appears to look like an owl. This lighthouse is a short white cylinder built in 1825. It has a fixed light that can be seen 16 miles away. This little lighthouse has been loved by mariners for almost two centuries. It has led them into Rockland Harbor safely. To see this lighthouse from Rockland take North Shore Road and follow the signs to Owls Head State park. At the parking lot take a short drive on the access road that leads to the light. The fog horn is very loud so be aware of that. This lighthouse can also be seen from the Vinalhaven ferry.
