Sheffield Apprenticeships: Do I Need Good Maths And English

?

One of the main fears that vocational learners have before starting a training program is whether their maths and english skills will be good enough to enable them to complete their qualification.

If you are aged 14 to 16 and join a vocational training provider such as Sprint Training in Sheffield as part of your school curriculum, then it really does not matter what stage you are at with Maths and English. All good training providers will have a strong support network in place to give you all the help you need to improve your key skills. This will be more than enough to help you achieve the Level 1 qualification you are undertaking.

If you are aged 16 to 18 and join a Stepping Stones program, then the same applies. The dedicated support team will work hard to ensure that your literacy and numeracy skills are brought to the level that will enable you to progress with your vocational training. Many training providers will accredit at Level 1 to enable you to move on, either into a new job or into further training.

If you start an Apprenticeship, then ideally your literacy and numeracy will already be at Level 1 before you start. However, if that is not the case, its not the end of the world, because your training provider will be able to give you a level of support prior to starting your apprenticeship that enables you to reach Level 1 standard for Maths and English.

These skills are developed within the Key Skills part of the apprenticeship and form an important part of the overall programme. In addition to numeracy and literacy, there are various Key Skills available such as communication and self-development. Various elements of the Apprenticeship programme enable Learners to gain confidence and, interestingly, in a recent survey, 80% agreed they were better at managing their time and responsibilities after several weeks.
