Starcraft 2 Elite Guide - Assumptions To Make When Scouting Terran

Learning to Scout can be what separates the good players from the bad in Starcraft 2. Most players know how to scout with Terran, Protoss, and Zerg, yet at the same time they have absolutely no idea what they are seeing other than the obvious. Today we're going to talk about certain assumptions you can make when playing as any race and scouting the Terran. Terran is one of the more complicated races to get scouting information from due to the fact that they can wall off their base extremely early in the game. Now we'll talk about things to look for to give you the proper scouting information.

"I scouted and saw he was taking both gases."

Previous to patch 1.1.2 this was a sure sign that you were about to be Reaper rushed. Now with Nitro Speed packs in the Factory Tech Lab you see this a lot less but it still does happen. Now when you see both gases taken early in the game this should tell you that they are planning for a very heavy tech match. You will want to keep a close eye on them and look for Factories and Starports with Tech Labs attached as this generally leads to them massing either Thors, Banshees, or Siege Tanks.

"I scouted a Factory with a Core Reactor"

This is generally a sign that they are planning a fast Helion rush. This is a common tactic Terran vs. Zerg as the fast Helions are perfect for breaking down your early armies as well as preventing fast expands. When you scout this you will want to bolster your defences as they are most likely just using the Helions to do what damage they can while teching higher in the background.

"I scouted a Factory with a Tech Lab"

This can mean quite a few things but generally its a sign that they are planning to go Thors or Siege Tanks. This can also mean that they are planning a Banshee rush as all they have to do is build a Starport and Lift-Off both buildings and land it where the Factory was maximizing the time for quicker Banshees. Whenever I scout this i tend to utilize this time for my opening attack if you allow terran to build their army up after this point it does not take long for them to overwhelm your army. Also if you are lucky enough to notice that they are planning the Banshee rush most definitely build detectors at this point around your mineral line, 9 times out of 10 Banshee rushes directly target your production and then your armies. Also take note that if you scout a Factory with no attachment this could mean he's already swapped the Factory and Starport and its off to the side, away from the regular scouting path, leading to a Banshee rush.

"I scouted Medivacs and Tanks with a Bio mix"

One of the most common Terran builds is the Marine Medivac Marauder build or MMM build or 1/1/1 build. It is extremely easy for this completely overwhelm those with lesser macro and micro abilities. When you scout this you will want to shift your plans to hard counter this strategy either with High Templar or Colossi for Protoss or Infestors or Banelings for Zerg, Roaches also make an excellent meat shield to make way for your volatile Banelings. This is one of the most frustrating things in Starcraft 2 to lose a game to because of the simplicity and speed that Terran can use to push enough units out to overwhelm you.

"I scouted multiple Barracks with various attachments"

When you encounter this you will want to take a few things into consideration before jumping to conclusions. The first thing you want to asses is what attachments are on the Barracks and in what order did they do this. Most of the time you'll notice the first Barracks with a Tech Lab attached what this generally means is that they are going for a couple earlier Marauders and are teching Concussion Grenades or Stim-pack immediately. If you happen to notice that the first Barracks has a Core Reactor this clearly states that they are planning for an early Bio push composed of mostly marines just waiting Stim-pack and rush up your ramp.
