Tweener cars have been introduced in plenty into the markets. This is a category of cars that cannot be easily classified. They are somewhere mishmash of a wagon and a hatchback. And, the Toyota Matrix was a kind of a trendsetter of this segment and still continues to be one of the most desirable in the given segment.
Interestingly, all prominent cars in this segment are characterized by their unique and distinct shapes. However, the Matrix goes one step further in incorporating maximum passenger and cargo space. The fresh edition of the
Toyota Matrix that released in 2012 remains essentially unchanged from what it was in 2011. And, it is still has some sure-shot winning edges as was the case with the earlier edition too. It is strong and versatile and quite like an expanded volume hatchback with the design elements of the classy Corolla. Therefore, a comfortable ride propelled by a smooth engine, is guaranteed. Basically, the Matrix we now have is more suited for a domesticated role than a sporty or adventurous one.
Trim Levels, Options and Body Styles
The base model, The Matrix L is equipped with 16 inch diameter wheel, fully power driven accessories, folding and heating rearview mirrors, keyless entry, telescoping and tilt steering, cruise control, a sound system that supports 4 speakers, auxiliary auto jack etc. If you go with the Matrix S, you will also have access to fog lamps, a 6 speaker system instead of 4 and a passenger seat with a fold flat feature.
Then, there is the S Premium which has a super powerful engine, a Bluetooth phone, a sunroof, audio connectivity and streaming. The six speaker audio system is supported by an iPod/USB interface. There is also the Sport Package available on both trims that provide underbody spoilers, fog lamps in the base models and 17 inch diameter alloy wheels instead of 16.
Performance and Power-trains
The 2011 Matrix has only the front wheel drive while the S is available in all wheels. The base model is driven by a 1.8 Liter four cylinder equipped engine that delivers a power of 132 Hp and a torque of 128 pound feet. There is a five speed transmission that"s manual and a four speed automatic transmission that is optional. EPA pegs the fuel efficiency values at 25mpg in the city and 32 mpg in the highways.
The Matrix S is supported by a 2.4 liter engine that produced a power of 158Hp and a torque of 162 pound feet. For the front drive models there is a standard five speed manual drive and a five speed automatic drive as well.
Safety Features
The safety features for the 2012 edition of the Matrix are standardized with traction control and stability. Other salient features include the front side airbags, side curtain airbags, and active restraints near the front head region and so on. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has awarded a "Good" rating to the Matrix 2012, with respect to frontal offset as well as side impact crash testing.
