6 Ways to Make English Time Fun

These days, the English language has become so popular that it has become almost necessary for all children, irrespective of their mother tongue to learn it. Learning English can be made fun for kids with the help of stories, games, television and music. You don't need to send your child to a school for learning a particular language that you yourself are fluent in. It can be easily done at home too. Follow these few tips and English Time with your kids will soon become the most awaited time of the day for both of you

1. Sit with your child every day for an hour at least. Studying a little each day is far more effective than devoting an entire weekend for learning.

2. Use colourful picture books to help your child recognize alphabets. Devote different colours to different group of alphabets and relate each alphabet to an object (as in, A for Apple and B for Ball and C for Cat).

3. Once she/he becomes familiar with alphabets, show her/him animated English movies with subtitles. Visuals hold on to memory better than only listening.

4. Read out cartoons to your child everyday. Show him/her the pictures simultaneously while doing so. Then insist that he/she follows those same pictures the next day and try to explain the story to you in English. Children love cartoons and they are sure to learn words and sentences related to them much more delightfully than from plain grammar books.

5. Stress on grammar right from the beginning. Grammar forms the base of any language and one must be good in it to master a language.

6. Use music and actions to teach. Get hold of English songbooks and rhymes with pictures that combine story-telling with popular music.

In addition to the above tips, there are plenty of language learning kits available along with interactive CDs. Spend a few hours randomly playing with word puzzles and enacting cartoon characters every day and in no time, your child will get the hang of grammar and start picking up words fast. Lastly, remember to encourage and praise your child, children at this young age do appreciate encouragements a lot.
