Confessions Of An Onion Ring Addict
One of the great things about losing weight and keeping it off is that every once in a while
, you get to take a day off and eat whatever you want. Everybody has something that they really like and it falls into that classification called "comfort food."
A friend of mine's particular affliction is cherry pie. He'll drive a good long way to get a fix, his record being 200 miles. Was it worth it? "Heeelll yes!" according to him. He had one slice and then bought the rest of the pie (for his family).
Another buddy of mine is a lobster nut. He's wolfed down several at one setting, along with the requisite two pounds of butter.
(Both of these guys are in good shape.)
Today, I had a few (orders) of onion rings. They might have been the best I've ever had and over the years, I've had a few orders. But it's been quite a while since I've had any fried food. In fact, it
may be over a year since I went down this path, maybe longer. I can't say for sure, but it sure hasn't been recent.
The onion rings were damn good and I'd even recommend them... once in a blue moon. One of the biggest mistakes folks losing weight make is that they don't allow themselves any free days, where they can eat anything they want. This is important, because if you don't do it, sooner or later you're going to go crazy and binge for a couple of days, weeks, months and then, the weight loss is kaput.
A personal trainer I know actually encourages "free days." He's one of the few who is honest about what he eats. Believe me, a whole lot of fitness folks don't eat anything like they tell YOU to eat. What they actually do is train harder...since they're in the gym all day, anyway. And a high percentage of them don't know anything about food, only what the latest gym rumor is, so don't look to them for nutrition advice.
The truth is that if you stick to your food plan, lifestyle change,or whatever you want to call it, 90% of the time, you'll be successful at losing weight.
That allows you to cheat once in a while, and not be a pain in everybody's ass with your diet requests. I once had an experience with a famous health advocate, who took over a half hour to order lunch, all by herself, never mind the rest of the table she was holding up, with her mind boggling requests to a waiter, who had no idea what she was talking about. (Go with the flow...it will win you friends and influence people.)
Once you get your body trained, a couple of orders of onion rings won't hurt it. And it will probably brighten your entire outlook on life. I might even be inclined, at that moment, to give the wife
some extra spending money. (Good thing she's not here.) What was that book...oh yeah..."Don't Sweat The Small Stuff." If you're program is rolling along, one meal won't stop the momentum.
