How Bipolar Disorder Started For Me?
I was in the United States Navy. The date was November 9, 1990 at the beginning of Desert Shield War retitled Desert Storm. I was in the Red Sea aboard the USS San Jacinto CG 56. My ship won the Battenberg Cup for the best ship in the Atlantic fleet a tremendous accomplishment. The June before i made Third Class Petty Officer Storekeeper ( I loved my navy job warehousing i was really good at it.) in first increment to which only one other person accomplished on this ship with about 450 crew members. We just left Egypt going towards Turkey. I suddenly had an attack of a manic high intense episode. My mind racing ten thousand miles an hour for twenty four hours a day. I either got no sleep or maybe two hours at most. I was very cocky with a dominant attitude. I was sent to The John F. Kennedy CV 67 to see their doctor. I thought I was smarter than him period. I tried to sneak of the JFK to go to my ship but they caught me.
We pulled into Turkey 2 days later. I was then flown to Sigonella. My next city was Naples, Italy where it has the Navy's command base for the Mediterranean Sea area. The first night there i checked in at the Naval Base. I left to go for a walk i will never forget. I was still in the Manic stage. I was very aggressive and easily angered. I just thought i was smarter than you and better than you. I will dominate you. Get out of my way. You are wasting my precious time. I walked up a road that happen to go up a mountain. I never seen so many kids playing soccer in one area in my life. I was listening to my cassette player to which i listened to all night Don Henley's Album The End of Innocence over and over again through out the long night. I was attempting to talk to the Italians in English not getting anywhere. It was very frustrating but I am in Italy. What do you expect? Of course, they are speaking Italian. At the end of the night i got drenched in a rain storm shaking, quivering cold. I took a cab back to the base. The cab cost me 50 dollars i was so far away from the Naval Base.
While in Naples, Italy for two weeks i found out i had Bipolar Disorder. I had no idea what it was and never heard of it before. What is it? I quite did not fully understand what Bipolar Disorder was at the time but 20 years later i sure know now. Then the Navy flew me all over the world. I went to Wiesbaden, Germany for a few hours. As they sent me to my next Destination Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland. They strapped me down to a bunk. I wanted to get up because I was having severe lower back pain. They would not let me move. I spent a few hours in Maryland. I flew to Fort Sill, Oklahoma then to Fort Smith, Arkansas then to Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi.
I was immediately put into the Pysch Ward at Keesler Air Force Base. I spent four months there til mid March 1991. I was given the medication Lithuim which seem to make the mania disappear. Lithuim also evened me out. I remember at first Lithium made me very stiff. In the Pysch Ward, when first arrive you are rated a "D" then you can progress to a "C" then "B" then"A" to where to get the most privileges. I got to an "A" eventually so they let me go out on the town with my mother then next weekend with my father.
I left Kessler Air Force Base went to Pensacola, Florida for a few days to process out of the United States Navy as "unfit for duty", but an Honorable discharge. They put me on the Temporary Disability Retirement List. My father picked me up in Pensacola. He drove me home to the Memphis, Tennessee area where i grew up.
