Setting goals is one of those topics you've heard so much about that it's exasperating! However

Goals are needed to bring us out of our passivity; urgency is aroused. A well stated goal has a time factor which serves as a deadline for actually getting something done. Our minds then spring into action! For instance, if I plan to "eventually get in shape" it will never ever become a reality. However, if I set a goal to look great for the reunion in September, even though it's only spring, I know I have to get going if I want to attain my goal.


Goals focus us in on the people and the resources we require in order to succeed. For instance, when you are shopping for a specific item like a house or car you start to take notice of only those particular items. Likewise, when you have a concrete goal you are actively shooting towards, you notice people and resources that can help you achieve your goal. If you are planning on getting in shape for the reunion you start to find ads for gym specials or community health and fitness groups; if you are trying to start up a business you gain an interest in books, seminars and courses revolving around business tools.


Goals help you weed out time-wasters in your life. Tell me, when was the last time you had a lot of time on your hands? Has that ever taken place? Probably not. Every choice we make to do something is a choice not to do thousands of other things. Aimless people without goals automatically move towards what is a) easiest or b) what is most urgent. Goal setters however, are able to turn down alternatives because they can see how saying 'yes' will negatively impact their capacity to carry out their goals.

People who set goals accomplish more. There you have it; the core reason to set goals that you've been avoiding because you're not a "goal-setting person". No more justifications. You need to become a goal-setting type! First, get a process tailored for goal setting. Second, put together or obtain a template to help you set your goals. Lastly, use these tools to guide your life. In turn, you will accomplish more, you will find more pleasure and direction in life and you will do more of the things you deem important.
