When you lie down, you make it difficult for your body to prevent your stomach acid from leaving your stomach, and this can give you acid reflux symptoms. So you want to leave some time between your snack and bedtime. You will sleep better and wake up feeling better.
Various drugs and medicines can be acid reflux causes. One of the worst culprits for causing acid reflux and heartburn are muscle relaxers. Blood pressure drugs can also be a contributing factor to acid reflux. Even over the counter blood thinners like Advil and ibuprofen can cause an acid reflux attack. These medications and any others that contribute to acid reflux symptoms are best avoided by people with sensitive stomachs.
Some people, of course, must take them for medical reasons, and in this case you should see if your doctor can recommend something else instead or a way to minimize these troublesome side effects.
This is going to sound silly, but if you bend over at the waist after eating a heavy meal, this can often induce an acid reflux attack. More acid gets produced when the stomach is full so it can break down the food for fuel. When your stomach is full, you are more likely to experience fluctuations in the "little flap" that keeps your food and stomach acid in your stomach. You can end up with acid in your esophagus, or even your mouth, when you bend over because that can cause the flap to fail. Staying upright after you eat can help you avoid this situation.
Most causes of acid reflux are things that you can control. Your doctor can assist you in determining what lifestyle changes may be necessary for you to control your acid reflux. You can start feeling better after making some simple changes to your lifestyle choices.
