The Best Grass Types & Varieties

Depending on the part of the country that a homeowner lives in makes a difference in the grass types that they should consider for their yard

. It is important to consider because if it is too cold and the grass cannot survive it will die and be a waste of money. On the flip side, if cooler weather grass is planted in a hot environment it will likely not survive in drought conditions. Most homeowners want a beautiful lawn, so getting the right grass for the geographical area is the only way to achieve it.

Warm Weather and Purpose

Along with the weather comes the importance of understanding that some grass types do better for some yard purposes. For example, if a family has children or pets and there will be a great deal of traffic on the lawn it is important to ensure that the grass can survive under those conditions. Buffalo grass is one that does well in low water conditions as well as hot weather; however lots of traffic causes worn paths fairly quickly. Zoysia grass on the other hand, does well with warmer weather and limited water, but also holds up well with traffic patterns. These are important factors to consider, but a few other grasses that do well in warmer climates are; St Augustine, Bermuda and Bahia grass.

Cooler Weather Grasses

Cool weather grasses are those that work best in cooler weather. Some grasses cannot handle a lack of sunshine or the cold extremities, but there are those that do just fine. These grasses include Kentucky blue grass, which has a beautiful color and holds up well. Fine fescue is a low maintenance grass type and thrives in cooler climates. Perennial Rye Grass is resistant to cooler weather, and is very durable as far as traffic areas.

So, regardless of what area of the world a homeowner lives in there is a grass type that allows them to have a beautiful yard, without a great deal of work. Choosing the right type of grass will cut down on some of the maintenance and certainly the headache of worrying with it dying.
